Apologies for the lack of other posts this week, friends. I am laid up with a bad cold and trying to rest as much as possible to get it out of my system.
Luckily, of course, star things continue to happen even you’re sick! See below for some cosmic highlights from the week:
Check out these wise words from Jess Bush (aka Nurse Chapel on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds!) on the commodification and privatization of space. | Art that goes to the Moon becomes trash on the Moon, no matter how much you pay for it.
What it’s like to be an eclipse chaser. | Like Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton (RIP), except with trusty eclipse glasses in tow.
Forensic files in space: how exactly does blood splatter in zero-g? | You should watch The Expanse for great examples of this, if you haven’t been watching it already.
From three months ago: scientists managed to initiate a “conversation” with a humpback whale, sparking hopes for one day making alien contact. | I feel like a conversation with a whale is pretty cool in and of itself, don’t you?
There’s a new Dark Sky Island in Denmark! | Welcome to the brilliant skies, Mandø!
I know, I know. Astrology ≠ Astronomy. Still: you can’t deny it’s fascinating. | Sri Lankan astrologers split over auspicious dates.
How long would it take to walk around Mars? | Hint: a long time. Pack good hiking boots.
NASA beamed a cat video into outer space. Here’s why. | For Reasons, we swear!
Yet another Dark Sky Park, this one in Switzerland. | Guten tag, star lovers!
The vernal equinox has officially brought spring to the Northern Hemisphere. | But you’d never know it from the snow here in Ontario, which has officially killed my tulips (RIP).
Data from a new telescope—the Condor Array—confirms Chinese astronomy sightings in *79 BCE*. | Astronomy: always and forever playing the long game.
And finally: 3 Body Problem, the adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, is now available to watch on Netflix! I am 1/3 of the way through it and about to head back with my ginger lemon turmeric tea in tow. | Nothing like terrifying alien invasions for a little escape from a cold.
Amanda, so many good looking links! I love how you put such a variety of topics in your posts. I plan to spend time this weekend checking out these links and the ones from last week (I'm a little behind). Hope you feel better soon!
